New ban on PFAS in firefighting foam

Bild
On October 3, 2025, the European Commission published new restrictions on PFAS in firefighting foams.

The restrictions will enter into force as of 23 October 2025 and cover the group of PFAS-substances (according to the OECD definition*) instead of individual substances as previously.

Presto has followed the restriction process since it started in 2022 and has preceded by an active phase-out from our products and the transitioning to risk-adjusted and PFAS-free fire protection.

We welcome the new restrictions and the increased clarity they provide for our customers and other stakeholders. We stand ready to support our customers in interpreting what these restrictions mean for their operations and have a deep knowledge and complete range of environmentally adapted and PFAS-free** alternatives available.

“We believe that the new restrictions are beneficial for both the industry and our customers and that it makes clear that the use of these PFAS-substances will be strictly limited and that it is only a matter of time before it must be completely replaced. We have been a firm voice in the industry for a long time, arguing that PFAS has no place in sustainable fire protection, and we welcome any initiative that accelerates its phase-out.” says Johan Wiksäter, Group Head of Product Supply and HSEQ.

* PFAS are defined by OECD as any substances that contain at least one fully fluorinated methyl (CF3) or methylene (CF2) carbon atom (without any H/Cl/Br/I atom attached to it) - Reconciling Terminology of the Universe of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances | OECD

** Defined as no added PFAS, in accordance with current legislation.
